We need to invent a machine that makes high quality protein. This factory machine needs to use a natural bio-process, consume no fossil fuels or other non-renewable resources, be small in size, and above have a super low cost to support the growing planet. At a minimum it needs to converts 3 lbs. of inedible material (such as grain and grass and insects deemed not fit for human consumption) into 1 lb. of protein that has all of the essential amino acids. The resulting product needs to be edible -- tasty even. It would be a bonus if the product could come pre-packaged attractively too. It needs to do all this for a total cost of around $2 per lb. of protein.
This chicken will never fly though. What's needed is something more expensive and full of scientific and ethical hubris -- something that was invented in a test tube and grows in a plastic vat of chemical muck. But we can dream of such wonder machines, can't we?
